Energia incasata de placa de siliciu determina o reorganizare a structurii cristaline, cu aparitia de jonctiuni, de 500 pana la 1.000 ori mai sensibile la lumina, decat materialele actuale, in special la radiatia IR. Deoarece noul material absoarbe aproape intreaga lumina incidenta, apare negru, de unde si numele: "black silicon".
